The whole sketch card business... I've got my opinions about it, which I won't delve into too deeply here. Basically, I think they are a really cool and wonderful opportunity for collectors to own an official rare piece of art from one of their favorite artists. But, some of the companies that make these cards are taking advantage of the artists. Long story short, tons of work, not much pay, recognition, or sometimes even respect.
That being said, this new company, Breygent, who did this CLASSIC SCI-FI AND HORROR MOVIE POSTERS series has upped the ante here. Rather than doing the quick pencil sketch cards, they're having artists do full color finished pieces of work. Obviously this is a lot more work, but we're being compensated for it. I think this is a great idea.
Click on the banner above and you'll be taken to a sample gallery of my cards for this set!
(Keep in mind that these were illustrated on small trading cards, not giant illustration boards...)
As you can see at the gallery, I paid tribute to some of the classics, like ATTACK OF THE 50ft WOMAN, CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, FLIGHT TO MARS, FORBIDDEN PLANET, H.G. WELLS' WAR OF THE WORLDS, and 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY... I used to marvel at these posters as a kid!
Anyway, these trading cards will be coming to a store near you soon. The set has other cool incentives like randomly inserted autographed cards from the actors and actresses who were in these movies! More soon...
